HOT, HUMID SUMMER WEATHER: As an upper ridge begins to strengthen across the Deep South, our forecast will highlight slowly rising heat levels over the next five days. Expect a high in the low 90s today and tomorrow, mid 90s Sunday and Monday, followed by upper 90s Tuesday and Wednesday. The first half of next week should feature the hottest weather so far this summer.
And, as heat levels rise, coverage of afternoon showers and thunderstorms will fall. The chance of any one spot seeing a shower today and tomorrow is 25-35 percent, around 20 percent Sunday, and 15-20 percent Monday through Wednesday.
The ridge weakens after Wednesday, so heat levels fall late next week with afternoon showers and storms becoming more numerous. See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.
TROPICS: A broad area of low pressure over the north-central Gulf is currently producing an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Over the next day or so, slow development of this system is possible while it moves generally west-northwestward across the northern Gulf. By the weekend, the system is likely to move inland over southeastern Texas or western Louisiana, ending its very low chance for development.
NHC gives the system only a 10 percent chance of development; the weather along the Central Gulf Coast will be routine through the weekend with the usual mix of sun and scattered thunderstorms. However, keep in mind there is a high danger of rip currents today.
The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
ON THIS DATE IN 2020: Hurricane Hanna, the 2020 Atlantic season’s first hurricane, made landfall along the unpopulated Padre Island National Seashore, carrying sustained 90 mph winds with gusts over 100 mph. Hanna’s memory for the Rio Grande Valley will be flooding rainfall, power outages, and an array of damage to poorly constructed buildings, from minor roof damage to complete demolition.
