ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In an effort to improve safety, Albuquerque Public Schools is implementing a clear bag policy for all athletic events. The policy will begin next week when sports open their fall season, and it will apply to all venues, including stadiums, fields, and gyms. It will also apply to non-sports events at those locations.
Bags must be clear, plastic, vinyl, or PVC, and one-gallon freezer bags will be allowed. Purses that are not clear, coolers, briefcases, drawstring bags, backpacks, luggage, and computer bags will be off-limits. The policy will not apply to student-athletes using district-issued team bags who are participating in the event.
In a statement, APS Superintendent Gabriella Blakey said:
We believe our first duty to students, parents and the community at an athletic contest is to provide a safe environment for all. While it’s an adjustment, many other school districts, universities and professional athletics events employ clear-bag policies. I know the APS family will embrace this.
