Tuesday’s Five Facts
[1] ABQ downtown vacant buildings ordinance will go into effect soon – An ordinance that requires property owners to register unused properties within Albuquerque’s “Downtown Core” and create a plan to keep them in good condition is going into effect. The ordinance requires property owners to register unused buildings with the City’s Code Enforcement Division if they were vacant for at least nine months during the City’s fiscal year. They will also have to obtain a vacant building maintenance license, and maintain them following city regulations. If owners do not comply, the city could take legal action and fine property owners $500 a day.
[2] Woman who pled no-contest for fatal hit-and-run gets 18 months on house arrest – A New Mexico woman will not be spending time behind bars for her role in a fatal hit-and-run. Jazmin Anesi was charged with vehicular homicide, but after pleading down to a lesser charge, was sentenced to 18 months on house arrest. In October 2022, Scott Toole was killed while working under a Ford Expedition when a PT Cruiser plowed into his car, knocking it off the supports and killing him. Judge Lucy B. Solimon sentenced her to 18 months on house arrest with an ankle monitor.
[3] Flooding for some areas in New Mexico & cooler weather – Cloudy skies could limit heavier rainfall in eastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon. However, places that see sunshine will have a higher chance at thunderstorms and heavy rain. Regardless, there will be widespread chances for rain and storms again Tuesday afternoon. Daily storm chances will continue into the end of this week. Dry weather returns to New Mexico for the Fourth of July as hotter weather also moves in. This stretch of dry and hotter weather will continue into the weekend.
[4] Oak Ridge Fire burns over 9,000 acres in Navajo Nation – The Navajo Nation is under a state of emergency after a wildfire near the New Mexico-Arizona state line exploded in size. The Oak Ridge Fire has burned over 9,000 acres in an area eight miles west of Window Rock. Some residents in the area have been instructed to evacuate. [5] Albuquerque holds annual Freedom Fourth celebration on Friday – With the Fourth of July around the corner, the City of Albuquerque is inviting the community to celebrate at Balloon Fiesta Park on Friday from 3 to 10 p.m. The annual Freedom Fourth celebration features music, local grub, activities for kids, and fireworks. Country-pop artist Hunter Hayes is headlining. The city is also offering free park-and-ride from the Northwest Transit Center and Coronado Center.
