Greek containership owner Costamare is the latest liner player to return to the newbuilding market, revealing an order for four 3,100 teu vessels from an undisclosed Chinese shipyard.
The New York-listed company said in its second-quarter earnings that the newbuilds will deliver between the second and fourth quarters of 2027, and each vessel will go straight into eight-year charters with what it described as a “first-class liner company.”
The identity of the builder and the charterer has not been disclosed, but Costamare said the project will be funded through a combination of internal cash and debt financing.
The company did not provide a price tag, but recent 3,000–3,500 teu orders in China have been inked at $45–55 million per ship, depending on spec and slot bookings.
This marks a fresh step back into the shipyard market for the Konstantinos Konstantakopoulos-led owner since late 2021, which currently operates a fleet of 68 containerships totalling around 513,000 teu — excluding the newbuilds.
The company spun off its dry bulk fleet earlier this year under Costamare Bulkers, which included nearly 40 owned vessels and a chartered-in fleet of roughly 50 bulkers operating through its CBI platform.
