The Cubs are taking precautions to keep staff and fans at the ballpark cool amid the dangerously hot temperatures taking over Chicago.
A sweltering heat wave will bring humid and hot conditions to the Chicago area beginning Wednesday, with high temperatures that will “feel” as high as 110 degrees at times, according to the National Weather Service.
The Chicago Cubs will play the Kansas City Royals at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at Wrigley Field and fans watching from the ballpark will brave temperatures around 100 degrees, according to NWS predictions.
To help fans beat the heat, Wrigley Field will be equipped with cooling stations, misters, a cooling bus and additional water stations, the Cubs said.
The team said they will also share information with fans as they arrive regarding the heat advisory that took effect at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Fans will also be greeted by important reminders like “drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, wear a hat, and take breaks from the sun,” the team said.
Digital signage will be on display to direct fans where to go if they need assistance, the team said.
Plus, the Cubs are hosting a pregame Sun Safety Day at Gallagher Way where fans can stop by for cooling towels, sunscreen and more.
Fans braving the heat on Wednesday can expect “very high heat index levels, very hot and humid conditions,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.
NWS predicts heat index values for Wednesday in Chicago are anticipated to reach 102 degrees by 3 p.m., where they will sit for a few hours until dropping to 96 degrees around 9 p.m.
Such high humidity and temperatures could lead to a slew of heat-related illnesses, ranging from heat cramping to the most severe, heat stroke.
