One wrestler had so much respect for Vince McMahon, they asked for his blessing to use a name they didn’t have to ask permission to use.
There is often a fight over the use of ring names and trademarks in the world of professional wrestling. That said, unless they already owned their name before arriving in WWE, these talents know they aren’t going to get to take their names with them when they leave. But, every once and a while, one wrestler has so much respect for his former employer, he asks and is granted permission to take the name, even when it wasn’t necessary to get permission in the first place.
Such is the case with William Regal. He recently revealed during a K & S WrestleFest virtual signing that he asked Vince McMahon if he could take the name William Regal with him after being released by WWE. Regal has so much respect for and values his friendship with WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon so much, that he wanted his blessing to use the name, even though it is Regal himself who owns the rights to it.
He explained, “I own William Regal, but if Mr. McMahon asked me not to use it, I wouldn’t use it… I’d be just Steven Regal. He gave me his blessing. No problems with me and Mr. McMahon at all.”
That’s how you know when someone has an incredible amount of respect for another person. Regal could have taken the name he owns anywhere and Vince probably wouldn’t have cared. But, because Regal and McMahon were so close and Regal believes he owes a lot of what he’s got to Vince, he felt it was the right thing to do to offer he does not use it.
Regal Will Eventually Be Back In WWE
While rumors have been shot down of Regal returning to WWE anytime soon, it feels inevitable that he finishes his wrestling run in WWE. Even with Vince now gone and not running things behind the scenes, Regal is also close with Triple H. When his contract is cleared up with AEW, it would be shocking if these two sides didn’t get back together.
