AEW has been firing on all cylinders in 2025, but there was still something lacking throughout the first several months for one division in particular. The tag team division was struggling, and has been struggling for quite some time in truth. However, recent developments from AEW have added some new life and fire into what was once the best tag team division on the entire planet. There are still ways to go to make the division as good as it can be, but there are undoubtedly several aspects across the board that have been improved in recent weeks to assess.
AEW’s Tag Team Division Has Been Weak
- 2024 and the start of 2025 were slow for the division.
- The Hurt Syndicate’s reign has been underwhelming.
- There has been a lack of depth in the division.
The AEW tag team division used to be the best on the planet, with this being one of the key selling points early on in AEW’s history. However, with more divisions cropping up, more titles being defended, and some notable teams either leaving or being thrown into the trios division, the tag team scene in AEW has lacked. In 2025, The Hurt Syndicate has dominated as Tag Team Champions, but without the show-stealing matches that AEW’s tag team division had become accustomed to. Additionally, none of their challengers have posed any real threat, as the division was severely lacking in any sort of depth. During their reign thus far, The Hurt Syndicate has fended off The Gunns, The Learning Tree, The Sons of Texas, Gates of Agony, and Top Flight, among others. These matches have underdelivered and fans haven’t cared all too much about them.
AEW fans have been begging for a renewal of tag team wrestling, and this was something even acknowledged by Tony Khan. When speaking at the Double or Nothing 2025 pre-show media call to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Khan noted that he wanted to bring focus back to the men’s tag team division when asked about the potential of women’s tag titles.
“I’m also focused on building back the men’s tag division. We’ve had a lot of injuries there, and now we’re trying to get people healthy and get the best teams working together. As I’m rebuilding the men’s tag division, that (women’s tag titles) is something I’m interested in doing in the future.”
Tag Team Matches Are Stealing The Show In AEW
- On both Collision and Dynamite, tag teams are delivering.
- New teams are being formed, and older teams are gaining momentum.
- The tag team division has always been about having good matches.
In recent months, tag team wrestling has been afforded way more time on AEW programming. Whether that be basic tag team matches or other big multi-man bouts involving several teams at once, AEW Dynamite and Collision has once again become a place for fast-paced, action-packed, and enjoyable tag team wrestling. It might seem simple, but this is all it was ever going to take for the division to regain some much-needed momentum.
In just the last couple of months alone, AEW’s weekly programming has played host to several show-stealing tag team matches, including FTR vs. The Outrunners, Brodido vs. The Young Bucks, ProtoShita vs. Brodido, The Young Bucks vs. The Outrunners, FTR vs. Bang Bang Gang, JetSpeed vs. FTR, and more. The conveyor belt of strong matches is striking, and it is making AEW fans care so much more about the division and the teams involved.
AEW’s Tag Team Division Could Soon Be The Best
- Non-title feuds are occurring in the division.
- Several teams have distinct personalities.
- AEW is building something special once again.
FTR and The Young Bucks are each two of the key foundations to AEW’s tag team division, but they can’t do all the heavy lifting alone. This is why AEW is steadily rebuilding. They are forming new teams, re-establishing old ones, and giving several pairings time to shine with big TV matches and character development, with several ongoing feuds in the tag team division helping to elevate everyone.
Some point in the near future, AEW could have a tag team division that includes FTR, The Young Bucks, a reunited Adam Copeland and Christian Cage, JetSpeed, The Hurt Syndicate, Brodido, The Outrunners, Sky Flight, any iteration of the Don Callis Family, The Death Riders, The Bang Bang Gang, Grizzled Young Veterans, La Faccion Ingobernable, and more. There is so much depth on hand here, and so much potential to craft something truly special. AEW is steadily getting there, and it won’t be long until fans are calling this the best tag team division in the world once again.
