ROUND LAKE, Ill. (WGN) — The superintendent of a school district in the Far North suburbs is set to explain what led to a $11 million budget error at a board meeting that is currently underway.
Just one week into the school year, Round Lake District 116 may be facing some controversy.
According to the school district, the 2024-25 budget approved by the school board wasn’t forecasted correctly.
In other words, the district’s estimate on how much money it would take to operate their 10 schools wasn’t close to the actual cost.
The school district says a former business manager made the error. The district has hired a new Chief Financial Officer.
The district says to fix the error, over the next two years they’ll be reducing administrative positions, leaving select vacant positions unfilled, limiting overtime expenses and more.
In a statement, the district maintains that this was only a forecasting issue, and no money is missing. They went on to say they’re working to improve their budgeting process in the future.
