AUSTIN (KXAN) – While Houston and Dallas get many of the headlines as areas that produce a lot of football talent in the Lone Star State, Austin is not to be discounted. Central Texas has continued to develop some big names and successful football teams.
We asked all the high school football players and coaches we spoke with in fall camp the same question: Who is the best player in the greater Austin area not on your team? The responses are in the above video.
The 2025 Texas high school football season kicks off Thursday with the Shoal Creek Showdown presented by Legacy Turf and Greens at 7:30 p.m. on KBVO. The yearly rivalry game features the Anderson Trojans and McCallum Knights.
The Shoal Creek Showdown marks the first game in another season that Central Texas high school football will appear on KBVO, with Roger Wallace doing the play-by-play.
KXAN will once again feature the Westlake Chaparrals on Friday night on KXAN.com. New this year, the Chaps’ Friday night games will also appear live and on demand on our smart TV streaming app, KXAN+. For the three Fridays that Westlake doesn’t play (one bye week and two Thursday games), we’ll stream the following games on KXAN+:
- Sept. 26: Round Rock vs. Cedar Ridge, 6:55 p.m.
- Oct. 3: McNeil vs. Vandegrift, 6:55 p.m.
- Oct. 10: Rouse vs. Georgetown, 6:55 p.m.
