SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Slavic Refugee and Immigrant Services hosted a celebration to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day on Sunday. The event was held at Liberty Station and about 400 Ukrainian families registered. The nonprofit helps provide resources, shelter, food and jobs to Ukrainian refugees.
“It’s so hard and painful, we left our house and never went back for almost three years,” said one couple who’s been hosted by an Eastlake family for about three years.
The gathering included food, music, face painting and more to bring together Ukrainian families. The event comes about a week after President Trump and President Zelenskyy met in Washington D.C.
For newly arriving Ukrainians, the day represents a powerful reminder of hope and resilience.
“Just pray, I think we have to pray for peace in our world,” said Pastor Riley McRae.
