As a mother raising six boys here in Maine, I care deeply about the example my husband and I are setting — and a very important lesson we can pass down is the value of participating in our democratic elections. Our Founding Fathers built this nation on the principle that every citizen’s vote should count, and count fairly.
I believe Maine needs common-sense improvements to protect the integrity and efficiency of our elections. One simple change in the Voter ID initiative moves the absentee ballot deadline up by just two days. It is a small change, but it could give town clerks much-needed time to process ballots and could help prevent the delays and last-minute rushes we’ve seen in past elections.
Polls are already extremely busy, especially in college towns like Orono. Consolidating drop boxes and setting clear guidelines could reduce confusion and make the process easier for voters and election workers alike.
I don’t believe these updates are about making it harder to vote, they’re about making sure our elections run smoothly, securely, and fairly for everyone.
Vote “yes” on Question 1 to protect the voice of every Maine voter.
