If you’ve logged onto HBO MAX recently, you’ve probably found yourself intrigued by a trailer for a brand new HBO Sunday night show called Task. The series stars the Hulk, himself, Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent, the great Tom Pelphrey as some sort of thief with a heart of a gold, and a murder’s row of rising stars as the various young FBI agents, family members, and gang members caught up in what appears to be Ruffalo and Pelphrey’s dangerous cat and mouse game.
Task is also creator/writer/showrunner/executive producer Brad Ingelsby‘s long-awaited follow up to the 2021 HBO hit Mare of Easttown. Like Mare, Task is set in the gritty suburbs of Philadelphia. That means, yes, we’re going to get Wawa references and “Hoagie mouth” accents again, but we should also expect the kind of psychologically complex drama that made the Kate Winslet show so addictive.
So when exactly does Task drop on HBO and HBO Max? Is the new Task show on tonight? How many episodes are in this new Sunday night HBO show? Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Task on HBO…
Is Task On Tonight (8/24/25)?
Nope. The new show Task is not out on HBO yet. We still have a couple of weeks before it makes its official debut.
Task Show Release Date:
The new HBO limited series Task will come out on Sunday, September 7. According to our calendars, that means it’s still two weeks — or as Taylor Swift would say, a fortnight — away.
How Many Episodes are in Task?
There are a total of sevent episodes in Task, which is envisioned as a limited series. The first episode of Task drops on Sunday, September 7. New episodes will continue to air on HBO and MAX on Sundays through October 19.
Task Season 3 Cast Info:
In addition to Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey, Task stars actors you might recognize from the Oscar-winning film CODA, the HBO hit House of the Dragon, Emerald Fennell’s polarizing drama Saltburn, Barry Jenkins’s celebrated adaptation of The Underground Railroad, and more.
The main Task cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton.
What Is Task About? Is Task a Spin-off or Sequel to Mare of Easttown?
Task is set in the working-class suburbs of Philly, where a string of violent home invasion robberies sparks an official FBI investiagation. Mark Ruffalo’s troubled Tom Brandis is the FBI agent in charge of the Task Force assigned to the case. Tom Pelphrey stars as Robbie Prendergrast, the grieving family man organizing the thefts to give his kids a better life. Things get even more complicated due to the fact that Prendergrast has been targeting gang houses.
Because Task is set in contemporary suburban Philly and comes from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby, you might be wondering if they’re connected. Will we see Kate Winslet in the show? From what DECIDER has seen so far, the two series seem to be set in the same world, but we have yet to see overlap in terms of cast or locations. We have seen a lot of references to Wawa, though. (Go birds.)
