First responders in Salisbury and Newburyport are searching for a missing boater after a vessel capsized in the Merrimack River, officials reported late Saturday.
At about 4:04 p.m. Saturday, responders from the Newburyport Fire, Police and Harbormaster responded to the Merrimack River on reports of a capsized boats, assisting the U.S. Coast Guard.
Two people on a 47-foot vessel had left from the Salisbury Marina before the boat began taking on water and sinking, Newburyport Police and Fire reported of the preliminary investigation.
One person on board at the time of the incident was rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to an area hospital by medical helicopter, the departments stated. Officials did not immediately give updates about the individual’s condition Sunday.
The other passenger remained missing as of late Saturday.
Officials said the Coast Guard, Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, Newbury Police and Fire, Salisbury Police, Salisbury Fire, Salisbury Harbormaster, and Atlantic Ambulance were providing mutual aid on Saturday.
The boat had sunk into the Merrimack River as of Saturday night while public safety officials remained on scene.
