Authorities are investigating after a lifeless 3-month-old baby was brought into a hospital in St. Lucie County on Thursday, authorities said.
The child was brought to the emergency room at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center at around 12:05 p.m. by their grandparents, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Upon arrival, medical staff advised that the child was deceased and showed signs consistent with possible neglect,” authorities said.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine how the baby died.
Deputies said they got a search warrant for the home associated with the case later that evening.
The baby’s mother and her boyfriend arrived at the residence shortly before authorities were going to search it, and the couple was taken to the Criminal Investigations Division to be interviewed, the sheriff’s office said.
Two children were removed from the home by officials with the Department of Children and Families.
Authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing.
