Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday accused the INDIA bloc’s Vice Presidential candidate Justice (Retd.) B Sudershan Reddy of “supporting” Naxalism. Shah stated that if the judge had not delivered the Salwa Judum judgement, India would have got rid of the extremist Left movement before 2020.
The union home minister was speaking during the inauguration of the Manorama News conclave, organised by the Malayala Manorama group in Kochi.
Amit Shah further said the Congress’ chance of winning the Kerala Assembly elections in 2026 has further diminished due to its pick of Sudarshan Reddy as the VP pick.
“Sudershan Reddy is the person who helped Naxalism. He gave Salwa Judum judgment. If the Salwa Judum judgement had not been given, the Naxal terrorism would have ended by 2020. He is the person who was inspired by the ideology that gave Salwa Judam judgment,” Shah said, referring to 2011 SC judgement on Salwa Judum, during a question answer session as part of the conclave.
What is the Salwa Judam judgement?
In December 2011, Supreme Court’s Justice Reddy ruled that using tribal youths as Special Police Officers — be it by the name of ‘Koya Commandos’, Salwa Judum, or by any other name – to fight Maoist insurgency was llegal and unconstitutional. He also ordered that they be immediately disarmed.
Shah further claimed that Kerala has faced the brunt of Naxalism.
“People of Kerala will certainly see that the Congress party, under the pressure of Left parties, is fielding a candidate who supported Naxalism and used a pious forum like the Supreme Court,” the Home Minister said.
Who is B Sudershan Reddy?
B Sudershan Reddy, the Opposition INDIA bloc’s pick as its vice-presidential candidate, started his career as an advocate with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh in December 1971.
Meanwhile, the BJP has selected Maharashtra governor CP Radhakarishnan as its pick for VP candidate.
