Biscayne Park Police arrested and charged a man with animal cruelty in connection with the suspected poisoning deaths of two cats.
The cats’ owner didn’t want to be identified, but she said she was grateful for the arrest.
“I really did not think we would catch the person who did this,” she said.
Over the last year and a half, someone has left plates of food near and around her home with a weird substance, she said. But last week, two cats that she’s cared for ate the food and died.
According to an arrest report, police came out to the neighborhood Wednesday and found two trays with suspected animal poison. A lab is working to confirm if it’s poison, but investigators said a vet already determined one of the cats died from poisoning.
“It was very heartbreaking,” she said. “I’ve thought this scene over 100 times and I feel that there was nothing I could have done to prevent this.”
The woman said her surveillance camera on Wednesday captured the person leaving the trays of food.
“I knew the spots he was likely to place at and I set up a security camera there,” she said. “I became calm. I knew I could not interact with him and I had to move quickly so I could catch him.”
On Wednesday night, police arrested Chaim Gubitz. The owner said police told her Gubitz confessed to putting the poison out for rats and not cats.
Emily Adams, who also cares for the cats in the neighborhood, said she noticed the plates a few weeks ago. She and other neighbors called police and even emailed city leaders.
“It’s terrible, it’s terribly evil,” Adams said. “It brought a lot of happiness in the sense that all these people came together for this one purpose.”
There’s now a sense of relief knowing police found the man they say is responsible.
“My priority was that this would be stopped and I suspect this gentleman won’t make the same mistake again,” the owner said.
Miami-Dade Animal Control unit sent the suspected poison to a laboratory.
Gubitz bonded out of jail Thursday.
