President Donald Trump is expected to leave the White House on Thursday to thank troops and D.C. law enforcement patrolling the city, a White House official confirmed to NBC News.
The White House is working on the location, timing and other logistics now, the official said.
Trump called in to a radio show hosted by Newsmax host Todd Starnes on Thursday morning and spoke about his plans.
“I’m gonna be going out tonight I think with the police and with the military, of course. So, we’re gonna do a job. The National Guard is great. They’ve done a fantastic job,” he said.
Trump’s public schedule says he’s set to sign executive orders in the Oval Office at 3 p.m.
Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared burgers with soldiers at Union Station on Wednesday.
“You guys are doing a hell of a job,” Vance told the troops at a Shake Shack as protest chants echoed.
The president’s federalization of D.C. 10 days earlier has rippled through the city, with Guard troops on streets, immigration detentions caught on camera and fear that people who need free health services will skip an event to avoid federal officials.
In Maryland, Gov. Wes Moore invited Trump to visit and take a public safety walk with him in Baltimore.
“Last week, you responded to my concerns about the deployment of National Guard personnel for municipal policing in Washington, D.C., by insulting me personally from the Oval Office,” he wrote in a letter Thursday. “So I wanted to write in order to clarify the root of my frustration and extend an invitation for you to visit Maryland, where we can discuss strategies for effective public safety policy.”
“Whatever date works best for you!” Moore said on X. “We hope you’ll come to see how we’ve built strong local partnerships and used data-backed solutions to deliver staggering drops in violent crime.”
