Toni Nadal has no doubt that Francisco Roig can massively help Emma Raducanu in the technical department and therefore help the 22-year-old achieve her goal of becoming one of the best in the game.
Roig, who worked with Rafael Nadal for 17 years, accepted to become Raducanu’s coach prior to the start of the Montreal Open. When addressing the partnership, the British tennis player kept it very direct and noted that she hired the Spanish coach because she felt he had what it took to make her a better player and help her legitimately challenge the very best players in the game.
Uncle Toni, who knows as well as anyone how Roig coaches, suggests Rafa’s ex-team member is unmatched when it comes to the technical department. And if the current world No. 35 can pick up his teachings, she could absolutely accomplish her goal of becoming a top player.
Toni Nadal: Roig can help improve technically and to become a very good player again
“Francis is a very good coach and a man who can help Raducanu to improve technically – he puts a lot of attention on this. In today’s game every player hits the ball very fast. But in the end tennis is about power and control – when you hit the ball fast without a good technique it is difficult to put five or six balls inside the court in a row. This is what Francis explains to players. I think he can help Emma to become a very good tennis player again,” Uncle Toni told BBC Sport.
Already in their second tournaments together, Raducanu showed signs of improvement in her game and came just inches away from recording her first victory against a world No. 1. Sadly for the 22-year-old Briton, she fell just short after Aryna Sabalenka earned a narrow 7-6 (3) 4-6 7-6 (5) win in their Cincinnati third-round meeting.
Now, Raducanu and Roig will hope to continue with the positive momentum at the US Open. A couple of days ago, the British tennis player said she was feeling “her best in years” going into the US Open.
