Daniel Jones wins the Colts’ starting job
Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced earlier today that Daniel Jones had won the starting quarterback job over former number-four overall draft pick Anthony Richardson. Indy is planning for Jones to be the quarterback for the entirety of the 2025-26 season.
“He’s our starting quarterback for the season,” said Steichen. “I don’t want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities.”
“Daniel does a nice job,” said Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. “First off, he is a veteran quarterback who’s played a lot of football. And the more football you play, the more you see, the more experience you have of dealing with problems, problem-solving on the field, handling different situations… I would say the experience that he has has been something that’s been valuable for him to be able to manage all those situations, which he’s done well.”
Are the Bengals closing in on an extension for Trey Hendrickson?
While speaking to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge before Cincinnati’s 31-17 preseason win over the Washington Commanders, Bengals star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is currently holding out for a contract extension, said that he and the team, “are in close agreement on the total average annual salary and the length of the deal,” according to ESPN’s Bengals reporter Ben Baby. At this time, the only issue remaining has to do with the guaranteed money that would come with a potential contract extension.
“Recognition’s not something I’m chasing,” Hendrickson said in late July. “It’s not. I think I’ve made my statements clear. Security is something that I value and [telling] my wife where we’re going to play. Those are the things that matter to me.”
Tampa loses a wide receiver
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan is “going to miss time” during the regular season with what head coach Todd Bowles says is a “severely strained neck,” according to ESPN’s Buccaneers reporter Jenna Laine. McMillan took a hard fall on the back of his head and his neck while jumping to make a catch in Tampa’s preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thankfully, McMillan was able to walk off the field before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
A trade update on Brian Robinson Jr.
A day after sitting out of the Commanders’ second preseason game, Washington head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that he and general manager Adam Peters met with Robinson on Sunday and told him they weren’t playing him.
“There’s just a lot of moving parts this time of year. Those things take place,” Quinn said. “And so I just wanted to make sure that’s my responsibility to let the team know whenever I can, so they’re not hearing any information from anywhere else. So that was all more of the standard operating procedure for me. But if I have a chance when things come up, especially during this time of year, where I can bring them together and discuss things, I want them to hear those things from me first.”
Still no QB decision in the Big Easy
New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore told reporters today that he has not yet made a decision regarding who will be the team’s starting quarterback to open the regular season against the Arizona Cardinals. He added that the team is “going through the process right now” of picking a starter.
“Again, [we’re] letting these guys continue to go through this journey,” Moore explained. “They’ve done some really, really good work. So, we’ll put ourselves in position for this Denver game and see how it goes from there.
A new pass rusher in South Beach
The Miami Dolphins are signing pass rusher and outside linebacker Matthew Judon to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million, according to sources who spoke to ESPN. Judon was seen visiting the Dolphins’ team facility on Monday.
A four-time Pro Bowler from 2019 to 2022, Matthew Judon was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2016, where he played before signing with the New England Patriots in 2021. Last August, Judon was traded to the Atlanta Falcons, where he recorded 41 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 17 games.
Plans for Steelers’ starters this week
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that all healthy players could potentially play in the team’s preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night. The only players who are confirmed to be out of the starting lineup are quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver DK Metcalf, pass rusher T.J. Watt, and defensive lineman Cameron Heyward.
Cam Ward and Jeffery Simmons respond to their training camp fight
Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons said that the incident at yesterday’s practice, where he shoved 2025 number-one overall draft pick and quarterback Cam Ward, was blown out of proportion. After Ward threw a touchdown pass and pushed Simmons, the three-time Pro Bowler shoved Ward in the facemask with two hands, which led to an altercation between Simmons and the offensive line. Simmons was escorted off the field following the incident and was unable to speak to reporters until today, according to the Associated Press.
“Shouldn’t get blowed up,” Simmons told reporters. “It’s training camp. Tempers flare, move on. At the end of the day, you know, can’t touch a quarterback. We at a joint practice and somebody touch our quarterback, trust me, I’m going to be the first one in. So I respect the hell out of the offense for having our quarterback’s back.”
“It was a training camp push and shove and a little bit of loud barking, and that was pretty much it for me,” explained head coach Brian Callahan. “It’s late August, and we’re ready to go play some real football.”
