A suburban high school student was shot and killed by a friend during a contest over who could assemble a handgun the fastest, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed.
The 17-year-old died Saturday night after being shot at a home along High Avenue near South State Street in Hampshire. Officers were called about a shooting at around 11:30 p.m. and found the teen who had been shot.
A Daily Herald report said family identified the victim as Deegan Kirschke, 17, a senior at Hampshire High School. In the report, Kirschke’s uncle said the teen was a wrestler and motor sports enthusiast. As of Monday, police have not confirmed the name of the victim.
Dr. Martina Smith, the superintendent of District 300 which includes Hampshire High School, released the following statement:
“On behalf of the entire District 300 community, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Deegan’s family and friends during this very difficult time,” Smith said. “Hampshire High School is committed to supporting students and staff as they navigate this loss, and counseling services are available to provide care and support to those in need.”
A Sunday Facebook post from Hampshire Police said Keyshaun D. Davis, 20, of Hampshire, was arrested on multiple charges in connection with the shooting, including involuntary manslaughter, endangering the life or health of a child, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a FOID card and possession of ammunition without a FOID card.
The incident was under investigation by Hampshire police in conjunction with the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force.
