With no PLEs or PPVs on hand during the week of August 11 to August 17, it was up to the weekly shows of WWE and AEW to do the heavy lifting in terms of in-ring quality. Monday Night RAW, Friday Night SmackDown, NXT, AEW Dynamite, and AEW Collision all offered up several matches, some of which were better than others. TheSportster’s rating system will determine the very best matches of the week across both of the promotions, with both giving a good selection.

The main event of NXT saw DarkState take on four defined stars, and it was nice to see so many talented names packed together in one match, teaming up despite their ongoing feuds and tensions, providing a nice storytelling dynamic.
DarkState impressed more than they have done thus far, though when the focus was on them, the momentum and interest in the match did slow down somewhat. The defined team of DarkState were the ones to stand tall, which made sense and gave them some necessary momentum and legitimacy as a stable.

Two brutes of the women’s division in WWE clashed on NXT this past week, delivering a hoss fight that featured power moves and a very authentic struggle, as the rookie Lash Legend fought from below against the experienced former champion.
The action did run a little slow at times, but it worked well in the confines of the match structure. In the end, Jax’s size was too much for Legend to handle as she fell to the main roster star. This was a good showcase for both women, even if it wasn’t the cleanest bout throughout.
Ricochet Vs. Ace Austin (AEW Collision)

Ace Austin’s introduction to the AEW faithful proved to be a nice showcase against Ricochet, with the two athletic stars showing instant chemistry with their sequences, counters, and more.
The audience were once again great during a Ricochet match, as they continued to get to him with “Bald!” chants. In the end, Ricochet beat the newcomer, but both looked good on the back of this contest.
AJ Styles & Dragon Lee Vs. Dominik Mysterio & El Grande Americano (WWE RAW)

In a preview of the TripleMania event in which three of these men challenged in the main event, this tag team match on RAW provided some nice action and smooth wrestling. It was quite long and had some dull moments, but these all led to some solid hot tags that got the crowd on their feet.
The teamwork and tag team psychology of both these thrown-together duos was commendable, all leading to Styles and Lee picking up a momentum-building victory.
Nigel McGuinness Vs. Daniel Garcia Vs. Hechicero Vs. Lee Moriarty (AEW Collision)

With a shot at Zack Sabre Jr.’s IWGP Title on the line at Forbidden Door 2025, the main event of Collision this week had some stakes, adding to the excitement and urgency of the contest, although the winner of McGuinness was quite predictable.
There were some contrived spots that got all men involved, especially when it came to intricate technical wrestling then felt a little too forced and convenient, but for the most part, everyone played their parts well and showcased their talents. It could certainly have been better, but it was still plenty of fun.
Brody King, Tomohiro Ishii & Hiromu Takahashi Vs. Young Bucks, Kyle Fletcher & Josh Alexander (AEW Dynamite)

AEW has been showcasing a lot of these “PWG-style” multi-man tag team bouts on TV recently, and they almost always deliver. This one on AEW Dynamite this week did lack stakes and storytelling due to the Young Bucks’ continued frustration at their lack of EVP status, but from an in-ring perspective, it was a lot of fun with crisp action, wild sequences, and a nice mix of both high-flying offense and stiff wrestling.
This one did admittedly drag on a little too long, especially when there were no real stakes at hand for the babyface team winners.
The Death Riders Vs. JetSpeed (AEW Collision)

After matches between the competitors in recent weeks, it did feel as though there was an added layer of animosity at hand between these two duos. The technical side of the match was well done and fluid, though the result never really felt in doubt as Jon Moxley and Wheeler Yuta stood tall.
The match had a very strong pace to it, allowing the JetSpeed pairing to shine against the heelish brutes, who used their numbers advantage to counter the momentum of their much faster opponents. It was the best match on AEW programming this past week.
Roxanne Perez Vs. Iyo Sky (WWE RAW)

The best match of the week came on Monday Night RAW as Iyo Sky and Roxanne Perez clashed in an impromptu bout, with Perez stepping in for the absent Naomi. They didn’t miss a beat throughout, having a very entertaining back and forth contest in which Sky used her experience and speed, whereas Perez used heel tactics and aggression to counter.
Not every step was perfect, but overall the match was very enjoyable and got the crowd steadily more and more invested. The ending was a little messy as The Kabuki Warriors inadvertently cost Iyo Sky the win, but it did further their ongoing story and tension.
