TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — One of Troy’s signature summer traditions returned this weekend — bringing food, music, and plenty of competition. Sunday was the annual Pig Out, and the Capital Region brought out its best restaurants for a day filled with BBQ.
As soon as you walked into Downtown Troy the streets were getting filled with people from all over, coming and lining up to taste some of the best BBQ there is. Some competitors were coming with a wide variety of dishes and flavors.
Owner of Dotty Lou’s BBQ, Joe Friedel told News 10’s Tyanna Xavier what was on the menu. “Our competition item is a brisket slider. We’ve got Pork Belly Vernon’s, we’ve got Saint Louis style ribs, we’ve got our signature Texas Twinkie, we’ve got cornbread, coleslaw, some mac and cheese. We got all the fixings,” said Friedel.
This was Dotty Lou’s third time competing in this year’s competition and fans were excited about the menu. Parker St. Germain, an attendee of this year’s event says he’s definitely looking forward to “The Texas twinkies at Dotty Lous.”
Restaurant vendors were putting their best foot forward to deliver some of the tastiest and fresh food around.
This event not only showcased BBQ but there were other vendors as well such as handmade candles, locally crafted beverages, live music, and even being able to see some wild birds you might not always see up close.
Competition between restaurants wasn’t the only competition going around. There was also a hot dog eating competition between locals where they had to eat 10 hotdogs in under five minutes and one of the judges was Mayor Carmella Mantello.
“It’s just so much fun, you know, it’s no Joey Chestnut, but I got to tell you, they are on the verge of a Joey Chestnut hot dog eating contest! So, it’s a lot of fun and you know, it’s beautiful. You’ll see so many families, it’s so family friendly,” said Mayor Mantello.
Whether it was trying to claim the Pig Out Champion title or just enjoying the food and music, Sunday’s event showed once again why this summer tradition keeps crowds coming back every year for more to downtown Troy.
