Triple-digit heat indices linger until a midweek cold front brings relief
Storms Fade, but the Heat Holds Strong
Sunday ended much like Saturday—hot, humid, and stormy in spots. While most of us enjoyed plenty of sunshine, scattered showers and storms fired up during the afternoon hours, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning to parts of central and eastern Kentucky. Some of that activity may linger into the evening hours before winding down overnight.
Sizzling Start to the Week
The big weather story continues to be the heat. Highs Sunday reached the low 90s, with heat index values near 100°—and the next few days will only intensify that. A strong mid-level ridge is parked over the region, locking in this hot pattern through at least Tuesday. Afternoon highs will soar into the low to mid-90s, and with the humidity factored in, “feels like” readings between 100 and 105° are expected. This could very well be our hottest stretch since late July. Make sure you’re staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and finding shade or air conditioning if you’re outdoors for long periods over the next several days.
Cold Front Brings Midweek Relief
While the ridge keeps most of us dry, an isolated storm can’t be ruled out the next couple of afternoons. The better chance for more widespread showers and storms arrives by Wednesday as a cold front sweeps through the Ohio Valley. That front won’t just increase storm coverage—it will also break the heat. Highs are expected to slide back into the upper 80s, with humidity levels easing just enough to make things more bearable.
