Alabama held its second scrimmage of fall camp yesterday, and unfortunately failed to emerge injury free this time.
The rumor mill says that it’s a shoulder dislocation of some sort and that Jam will miss a few weeks. Injuries are unfortunately inevitable in this sport and losing a key veteran weapon on offense is never a good thing, but there is substantial depth at the position. Some combination of Richard Young, Daniel Hill, and Dre Washington will hold down the fort until Miller is able to return, and big time freshman AK Dear is waiting in the wings as well.
DeBoer also said that both James Smith and Jaeden Roberts were held out again. Roberts is dealing with a concussion and in the protocol, and no details were offered about Smith.
One interesting note from several sources is that Dijon Lee was getting extensive time with the first string defense, spelling Domani Jackson for much of the afternoon. This is likely nothing more than protecting Jackson and letting Lee get some run for developmental purposes, but does support the hype that Lee has received in camp.
— Quarterback Ty Simpson earned praise again for his efforts in the second consecutive scrimmage. He sounded to have showed out for a second consecutive week. There seems to be no complacency there even after being named the starter this past Monday.
— A few notes about what Simpson did: He threw a notable touchdown pass to Ryan Williams. Simpson also scored off a breakaway rushing touchdown that impressed several folks.
By most accounts, the defense was sound and did its job in taking away explosive plays, and Simpson did an outstanding job distributing the ball to his playmakers while protecting it. That is the recipe for winning this season, and the explosives should come as the offense jells.
Outside of the unfortunate news around Jam, it sounds like the 2025 team is on track.
