CORINTH, N.Y. (NEWS10) Back in April, 3 juveniles vandalized the Hudson River Mill Museum in Corinth, resulting in damages worth more than $100,000. When it came time to rebuild, the Hudson River Community Credit Union stepped in to help with fundraising efforts. Alongside the community’s help, they were able to present the museum with a check worth more than 20,000 dollars.
According to museum staff, the damage was unfathomable. They said that the juveniles smashed 30 windows made of antique glass, broke every glass frame in the exhibits, sprayed 8 fire extinguishers around the building, and more.
Laurie DeLong, Board President of Hudson River Mill Museum said that one of the most devastating parts of the vandalization was the damage to a mural painted in 1998 by local artist Esmond Lyons. Laurie went on to add, “The worst part of it, I think, there was their total destruction of anything that they could. But the mural, which was so important to us– when I heard that that was damaged, it was really distressing to hear that.”
A fundraiser was set up by Hudson River Community Credit Union, with the credit union matching the donations of up to $10,000. After the end of the fundraiser, with the matching funds, a total of $20,300 was raised. The Hudson River Community Credit Union began inside of the mill in the 1950’s, and staff said that it was fitting to have the credit union’s help in the rebuilding efforts.
The museum is run by volunteers and sustained by community support. The money that was raised allows for the museum to put up an entirely new security system in addition to other repairs.
The board of the Hudson River Mill Museum is hopeful that repairs will be completed within the next 5 years, after more building condition studies are done.
