The Phillies ace was dealing with shoulder soreness earlier this month, which led the club to give him a few extra days of rest between his Aug. 2 start at home against Detroit, when he gave up three home runs in a losing decision, and his Aug. 10 outing at Texas, a 4-2 win where he pitched through five innings.
The right-hander also pitched against the Nationals on Friday night down in D.C., pushing through another five innings in a 6-2 Phils win where he didn’t get the decision.
Noticeably, though, the 35-year-old was throwing with diminishing velocity, which this late into the season and pushing further into the playoff picture, was a rapily growing concern.
Right now, there is no timeline for Wheeler’s return.
The Phillies will wrap their series against the Nationals down in Washington on Sunday, then return home to Philadelphia on Monday, where they’re likely to learn more.
