A man with a screwdriver was fatally shot by a resident during a home invasion late Friday night in Joliet, police said.
At approximately 10:28 p.m., officers with the Joliet Police Department were called to a residence on Hadrian Drive near Cumberland Drive regarding a home invasion. Officers arrived at the home, where they “discovered signs of forced entry” and located an unresponsive male on the second floor, authorities stated in a news release.
The man, who had apparently been shot, was pronounced dead at the scene.
During a search, police entered a bedroom and found an infant and a woman, who was in possession of a handgun, according to police.
Law enforcement determined someone forcibly entered the home, prompting the victim to grab her gun and hide in a bedroom closet with her child. When the suspect went inside the bedroom, the victim fired at least one shot, striking the suspect in the head, police stated.
Authorities said the suspect was wearing gloves and had a screwdriver in his possession. He wasn’t known to the victim.
The victim was fully cooperating with detectives, who were conducting an investigation into what occurred. Anyone with video footage related to the incident was encouraged to call Joliet police at 815-724-3020.
