Following the August 13 edition of AEW Dynamite, Bryan Alvarez discussed the booking of the undefeated wrestler Hologram on Wrestling Observer Live. After Hologram’s record was announced on the broadcast as 29-0, Alvarez questioned why a wrestler with such an impressive undefeated streak has yet to be granted a championship opportunity in All Elite Wrestling.
During his recap of the show, Alvarez pointedly addressed the discrepancy between Hologram’s perfect record and his standing in the championship rankings. “They billed Hologram…as 29-0,” Alvarez said. “29-0! He’s won 29 matches and lost none. Can’t get a title shot. Stokely gets more hoes than Hologram gets title shots”.
Alvarez and others have previously noted that wrestlers with less successful records have received numerous title matches. For comparison, since April 30, 2022, wrestler AR Fox has competed for a championship on eight separate occasions in AEW and ROH, including multiple challenges for the AEW International Championship and the AEW World Trios Championship.
The booking suggests that AEW President Tony Khan has a long-term plan for Hologram, slowly building his undefeated streak to establish him as a major future star. This method of building a wrestler’s credibility before elevating them is a classic wrestling strategy. However, the decision to withhold a championship match despite 29 consecutive victories has become a significant talking point that the promotion has yet to address in its storylines.
As Hologram’s win count continues to climb, the questions surrounding his lack of championship contention are likely to grow louder.
