VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Oceanside Area office has announced plans to conduct a DUI sobriety checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 15, at an undisclosed location in North County.
According to CHP officials, the checkpoint will be located in the unincorporated community of Valley Center. It aims to identify and remove impaired drivers from the roadway in an effort to prevent crashes, injuries, and fatalities caused by intoxicated driving.
“All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on our local roadways by intoxicated drivers,” said CHP Captain Brad Palmer. “The mission of the CHP is to protect life and property for every person who lives, works, and travels in California. Removing impaired driver’s saves lives, and that’s our number one goal.”
CHP officials say the checkpoint location is chosen based on areas with a history of DUI-related incidents and collisions. While the exact location has not been disclosed to the public, all vehicles passing through—traffic volume permitting—will be screened for drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
“Our objective is to send a clear message to individuals who consider driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs: you will be caught, and your vehicle will be towed away,” Palmer added.
The checkpoint will be supported through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
