CHESHIRE, Conn. (WTNH) — State and local investigators filled a quiet Cheshire neighborhood for more than 15 hours after a house fire early Tuesday morning.
At around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a medical examiner van was seen coming and leaving the property after loading a stretcher into the back of the vehicle. Two people were inside the home at the time of the fire at 3 a.m. — one person was taken to the hospital, the other was unaccounted for.
It is not yet confirmed whether or not they found the unaccounted person.
Officials say that the fire may have started in the back of the house. News 8 drone footage above showed the destruction that was left behind by the flames.
A woman named Lori Stocks on scene said that her ex-husband was inside the house an was awakened by flames as he walked out of the master bedroom. Her ex-husband, who’s in his 60s, used a fire ladder that goes out the window to escape, according to family members.
A fire ladder that Stocks said she bought.
“I bought it when we first bought the house cause I thought, ‘God forbid there was ever a fire’ because you know, how would you get out,” Stocks said.
Stocks continued to say that he made it to the roof, and apparently had to jump. It’s not clear what happened to the second person.
Heavy equipment was brought around the back of the house as dogs searched through the wreckage. It’s unclear whether the dogs were trained to find accelerants or a person.
Family members say there was apparently an explosion, along with fire. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause.
“I just had to come because I just felt like maybe this is just a really bad dream, you know, but it’s not,” Stocks said about the fire. “I just feel like somebody kicked me and I can’t stop shaking, I don’t know what to do.”
