The Chicago Cubs will get a boost to their lineup Tuesday, as catcher Miguel Amaya has been activated from the injured list.
In addition, the Cubs have also activated pitcher Javier Assad from the 60-day injured list ahead of their series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In corresponding roster moves, the Cubs designated infielder Jon Berti for assignment, and optioned pitcher Nate Pearson back to Triple-A Iowa.
Amaya, who has been out of action since late May with an oblique strain, was having a strong season prior to going on the injured list, slashing .280/.313/.505 in 10 plate appearances for the Cubs. He has four home runs and 25 RBI’s on the season, and already had nine doubles to his credit in 27 appearances.
Assad has missed the entire season for the Cubs, opening the year on the injured list with an oblique strain of his own. Last season, he appeared in 29 games for the Cubs, posting a 7-6 record and a 3.73 ERA in 29 starts.
In his Cubs career, Assad has a 14-11 record with a 3.40 ERA, striking out 248 batters in 294 innings.
With Amaya’s return, the Cubs have opted to hold onto three catchers, instead choosing to designate Berti for assignment. In 100 at-bats this season, Berti has a .210 batting average with two RBI’s, and he has stolen 11 bases for the Cubs.
This was Pearson’s fourth stint with the Cubs this season, and he gave up four hits and no earned runs in four innings of work. He had one strikeout and one walk during his most recent call-up.
The Cubs and Blue Jays will get things going on Tuesday night in Toronto, with first pitch set for 6:07 p.m. Central time.
