MOUNT PLEASANT — While driving in the downpour that caused an emergency flash flood warning on Aug. 11, an officer’s dash camera footage captured video of lightning that struck a power line.
The footage — that the Mount Pleasant Police Department later posted to their social media accounts set to the tune of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” — shows the bolt striking a power line, causing a plume of fire to quickly ignite and sparks to fly on the other side of the road.
“A bit too much excitement for a Monday!” the post read. No one was injured in the incident.
U.S. Highway 17 was shut down between Shelmore and Anna Knapp boulevards for about two hours midday on Aug. 11, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Robert Blaschke. Dominion Energy quickly responded, restored power and removed the downed lines, according to the post.
The roadway reopened to traffic “pretty quickly,” considering the weather conditions, Blaschke said.
Despite the light-hearted tone of the post, Blaschke said the incident serves as a warning that drivers need to “remain vigilant” at all times, especially while driving in such weather conditions.
