COLDWATER, Mich. (WANE) — Angola High School Girls’ Basketball was putting in overtime on Sunday, but not on the court.
The team players rolled up their sleeves and got to work at Kick’N Kountry Bar and Grille, just 15 minutes north of Angola in Coldwater, Michigan.
Each player got to try their hand at various restaurant tasks, from taking orders to delivering pizzas. Restaurant Owner John Downing reached out to school clubs around the area about the fundraising opportunity. Head Coach Caela Walker thought it would be a fun way for the girls to earn new uniforms.
“Our coach is very swaggy so she likes the new kind of stuff and I love that,” Sophomore Ella Savick said. “If you look good, you play good.”
But these ladies walked away from Michigan with much more than money.
Many players had never worked in a restaurant and they expressed sharing this new experience brought the team closer together.
“When we’re like making pizzas in the back, or having to communicate to each other, it’s like bonding us,” Sophomore Kendall Vandeerwal said.
Getting to travel out of state and meeting potential fans was also an objective.
“It’s really important just to show like that we care, and show the others in the community what their support is doing for our program,” Sophomore Stella Stockamp said.
Angola fans were also reported to come out to support their home team, settling their bill with sizeable tips.
A portion of tips, pizza and ice cream sales went towards Angola High School’s Girls’ Basketball Team.
Kick’N Kountry Bar and Grille is still counting how much the girls made, with one manager saying their fundraisers usually rake in more than $1,000 for clubs and teams.
