SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Dozens of families welcomed home about 75 U.S. Navy sailors Thursday as the USS Savannah came back to its homeport, Naval Base San Diego.
The USS Savannah is a combat ship that was deployed for 12 months and had a dual crew. Part of the crew served six months and then switched in the Philippines to another crew who returned home after serving the second half the mission.
“I can’t wait, we can’t wait to see him,” said Suzanne Walters who was waiting for her son, Casey. She and her husband flew in from East Tennessee to welcome their son home.
The USS Savannah returned from its maiden deployment, making port visits across the Indo-Pacific including Cambodia, Singapore and the Philippines.
“Those ports we visited are very important to us, they are allies to the U.S. Navy,” said Commander Robert Schmidt.
The U.S. Navy doesn’t disclose deployment timelines, so no word on how long the sailors will be home, but they will have time to rest and enjoy family.
