SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A parking lot in Grantville that will be the site of a future affordable housing property opened Thursday as a place for people and families experiencing homelessness.
The new safe parking program provides 20 overnight parking spaces for people to sleep in their vehicles, get meals and access to resources, according to the County of San Diego.
“Everyone’s journey into homelessness looks different and so will their journey out of homelessness,” said Dijana Beck, director of County Office of Homeless Solutions. “Based on that understanding, as well as input from the community and people with lived experience, the County has established a variety of emergency housing options, including safe parking, so that we can meet the diverse needs of people experiencing homelessness.”
Other safe parking programs in San Diego County include Bancroft Safe Parking in Spring Valley (launched in August 2024 with 27 spaces) and the Magnolia location, which is being renovated and has 17 spaces.
The affordable housing property set for Grantville will break ground at the parking lot site in late 2026.
