Friday’s Five Facts
[1] Officials say hundreds of homes damaged in Ruidoso flooding – The Village of Ruidoso is now saying the damage from the flooding is worse than they thought. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and other officials gave an update Thursday. The latest update has anywhere from 200 – 400 homes damaged and at least 150 families impacted. Crews are in the area are working on broken water lines and restoring clean drinking water. Drinking water is available at the Gateway Church, Wingfield Park, and at the Humane Society.
[2] State changes to how it handles cases where babies are born with drugs in system – Four children have died under the New Mexico CYFD watch since April. Many lawmakers have been vocal about the state’s failures and the federal CARA Act, which lets moms with drug problems take their babies home after they’re born. Lawmakers this year moved the program to the New Mexico Health Care Authority and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is implementing the changes early. Hospitals would now hold drug addicted newborns until at least CYFD files an abuse and neglect petition. A judge would ultimately decide on that petition, including whether CYFD would continue to have custody of the newborn.
[3] Spotty storms and hotter weather before muggier pattern – Friday will be a bit calmer once again with most showers and storms developing and moving across northeastern and east central parts of New Mexico. Temperatures are also expected to climb well into the 90s and 100s through Friday afternoon. As we head into the weekend, low pressure will build off to our east. This will bring more moisture into the eastern half of the state with more showers and storms. This will also bring an increased flooding threat to many locations across eastern New Mexico.
[4] Santa Fe police search for suspect after elderly woman attacked and robbed – Santa Fe Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the suspect accused of robbing an elderly woman. Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday officers received a call about a 75-year-old woman being forcefully robbed. In a video from the area, you can see a struggle taking place as the woman falls out of her wheelchair and the suspect takes off. Investigators are trying to identify the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Santa Fe Police.
[5] NMDOT warns of traffic ticket text scam – The New Mexico Department of Transportation is warning residents about a string of text scams going around. The latest scam says the person has outstanding traffic tickets and provides a malicious link to click on. The department said they will not call or text someone asking for payment information. They said if you receive this type of text, don’t click the link and block the sender.
