Come January of next year, management will drastically change at one of Miami‘s premier parks.
Late Thursday afternoon, city commissioners voted in favor of abolishing the Bayfront Park Management Trust on Jan. 1 of 2026.
The park has been the center of controversy recently, with some city commissioners questioning the operation of the facility, including being suspicious of mismanaged funds.
Commissioner Joe Carollo has been the chairman of the trust for about the last seven years.
Commissioner Joe Carollo was removed as chair of the Bayfront Park Management Trust and replaced with Commissioner Miguel Gabela. NBC6’s Steve Litz spoke to them both.
A few months ago, Commissioner Mike Gabela took over that position. He says an audit is underway, looking into the operation and finances of the trust while it was under Carollo’s watch.
Carollo insists the park has thrived under his management, generating millions of dollars for the city.
He denies any allegation that the park was mismanaged.
In the run-up to the Jan. 1 date, city officials will seek input from residents and stakeholders as to what the best way is to manage Bayfront Park.
Commissioners Ralph Rosado, Damian Pardo and Gabela voted in favor of abolishing the Trust.
Carollo was a no vote.
During the debate on the matter, Carollo and Gabela exchanged heated words, raised their voices and lobbed personal insults at each other – something that has become almost a regularity at Miami city commissioner meetings.
