DENVER (KDVR) — Following a four-day trial, a jury on Thursday convicted a man of first-degree murder in a 2016 stabbing case inside a Colorado Family Dollar store, which left one person dead.
Anthony Dennis Grayson, 51, was convicted in Adams County District Court of fatally stabbing Alejandro Alvear, a manager at the Family Dollar store located on Pecos Street.
“This was a senseless act of violence in a public setting that cost a man his life,” said District Attorney Brian Mason in a press release. “Thanks to the excellent work of law enforcement, eyewitnesses, and our prosecution team, we were able to secure justice for Mr. Alvear and his family.”
On September 1, 2016, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a stabbing at the store.
The DA office said that surveillance footage and witnesses reported that Grayson confronted Alvear, demanding money and threatening to stab the store manager. Shortly after, Grayson pulled a knife and stabbed Alvear multiple times.
Alvear was transported to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Grayson was still at the scene, where police took him into custody and later was charged with first-degree murder.
The case had experienced delays due to requests about Grayson’s competency; he was later found competent to proceed and chose to represent himself at trial, stated the DA’s office.
Grayson now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole and his sentencing is scheduled for July 29.
