The hands-down favorite fries of those surveyed were the duck fat fries at Tattooed Moose, which has locations in North Charleston and Johns Island. Some note the seasoning. Some note the duck fat used to fry them. Some note the house-made garlic aioli. There is also a garlic and blue cheese version as well as one with gravy. Pro tip: order them alongside their famous duck club.
Other favorites (in alphabetical order):
La Cave’s pommes frites come piled high and are served with a bright, housemade rosemary-lemon aioli — this crispy, golden version is perfect for sharing over cocktails or as a starter during a full dinner.
Sports-focused Cleats – from Daps Breakfast & Imbibe’s Jeremiah Schenzel – serves the elusive yet delicious waffle fry. There is the classic version as well as a garlic option with garlic, garlic cream and herbs. Bonus points for dipping these fries in Cleats cheese sauce.
Heavy’s Barburger, located in the former Tattooed Moose space on Morrison Drive, serves some of the best burgers in Charleston, and it isn’t messing around when it comes to fries. The restaurant offers two versions – crinkle cut and sweet potato – and there is no shame in ordering both.

Wagener Terrace’s Herd Provisions serves tallow fries with rosemary aioli at lunch and dinner. The tallow adds another level to this delicious version.
East Bay classic High Cotton serves its fries tossed with rosemary and sea salt and serves them with a bold, creamy house-made roasted garlic aïoli.
Hugh-Baby’s BBQ & Burger Shop has both classic French fries and chili cheese fries. Both hit the spot alongside sandwiches like fried catfish or any burger on the menu.
Kairos Mediterranean has multiple locations where you can get Greek fries with feta. They are perfect to dip in any of the sides like hummus, baba ganoush, spicy harissa and tzatziki.
Moe’s Crosstown Tavern serves an exemplary bar fry. Order those alongside onion rings and mozzarella sticks and you have a holy trinity.
Folly Beach’s Rita’s Seaside Grille serves seasoned curly fries. There isn’t anything better than some crispy fries and a cold drink after a day at the beach.
Rudy Royale is celebrating national French Fry Day by offering free fries with the purchase of a cocktail during happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on July 11.
If you’re a classic steak fry fan, Sesame Burgers & Beer in Mount Pleasant and Park Circle may serve the best version in Charleston.
