CHICAGO (WGN) – It’s not just about the racing in downtown Chicago this weekend.
NASCAR is trying to grow a new generation of fans with an expanded Kids Zone.
Grant Park’s Butler Field was the place to be, especially for NASCAR newbies.
Located steps from the race course and free to the public, it features a variety of attractions for those who won’t be in the stands, but still want to enjoy.
At the Kids Zone, WGN-TV met 11-year-old Brian Stanley, who said he wouldn’t mind spending all day there.
“I like it. I like how [the cars] they go fast around the corners and such,” Stanley said.
It’s exposure NASCAR driver Michael McDowell says goes a long way.
“We’re introducing fans to our sport and hopefully giving them an exciting time and we’ll turn them into longtime fans, but also just the fact that the race is coming to the people, not the people coming to the race,” McDowell said.
