JOLIET, Ill. — A Joliet woman was charged after allegedly leaving her elderly Labrador retriever outside in the heat without food and water. It had to be euthanized later.
Kerrie Swick, 58, is facing a charge of aggravated animal cruelty after police responded to her home in the 500 block of Springwood Drive on Wednesday morning after 9:30 a.m.
Swick called police requesting assistance moving her Labrador retriever, named “Bear,” from the backyard so they could be evaluated by a veterinarian.
The dog was located in the backyard without shelter, food or water.
Police allege the dog had been outside since 8 p.m. the prior evening and was in grave condition.
It was determined Bear had an internal temperature of around 110 degrees and had suffered from heat stroke.
The dog was humanely euthanized due to its condition.
She was arrested just before 2:40 p.m.
