Massachusetts State Police said the explosions reportedly came after a vehicle offloading the fireworks caught fire.
Multiple explosions rocked a Cape Cod community ahead of its annual Fourth of July celebration, officials said, injuring eight people.
During the setup for the fireworks display around 4:37 p.m. Wednesday, there were “multiple explosions” at the New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee, Mashpee Deputy Fire Chief Brenden Ramsey said in a release Wednesday night.
Eight people were evaluated by medical teams, Ramsey said, including one person with serious but non-life threatening injuries who was airlifted to a hospital in Rhode Island. Another person was transported to a local hospital, but the other six were treated on-site, according to the fire department.
Multiple agencies including local fire departments, the State Fire Marshal’s office, and the FBI’s Bomb square responded to the scene, Ramsey said.
“At this time, authorities remain on site and the incident is currently under active investigation,” Ramsey said.
Initial reports indicate that the explosions came after a vehicle offloading the fireworks caught fire, Massachusetts State Police officials said. The display was permitted, the agency said.
Videos of the explosion on a golf course show bright sparking fireworks in a cloud of white smoke, according to one posted by a Boston 25 News reporter.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office did not immediately return a request for comment Wednesday evening.
