BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Thousands of people made their way around Western New York to raise money for cancer research at this weekend’s 30th annual Ride for Roswell event.
“Cancer has struck home, close to home, many times in my family, and to know that these funds are being used to research cures to cancer that might save people’s lives down the road, I wish some of these cures had been available for my relatives who we’ve lost,” said Jim Mize, who has been a volunteer at the event for 18 years. “So I’m so grateful for the researchers, all the people who are riding.”
This year, more than $6 million was raised, bringing the grand total since the event began to over $80 million.
“More people are alive today that are cured of their disease because of the funds that are raised here at this ride,” said Dr. Candace Johnson, Roswell Park’s president and CEO.
Riders could choose between nine different routes, ranging from four miles to 100 miles. Along the course there was no shortage of encouragement.
“I’m riding to help support Roswell Park and the wonderful work they do,” one cyclist said. “I’m very proud of my wife, who also works there as a researcher. She’s researching prostate cancer. It’s amazing the things they’re doing and the technology they’re coming up with. We’re very proud to support them.”
“It’s just such a positive environment, and the thing I love about it too, it’s the entire community coming together to do something that benefits everyone,” Mize said.
