An event called “Not Another Brick in the Wall: A Stonewall and Atlanta Commemorative Protest” is set for Saturday, June 28, from 1-3 p.m. in Piedmont Park.
Hosted by 50501 Georgia – the movement fighting to uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach – the gathering near the Oak Hill entrance at 10th and Argonne will feature guest speakers, including longtime activists Dave Hayward and Maria Helena Dolan.
According to event spokesperson Tammy Pallot, the June 28 event will commemorate a demonstration held in Piedmont Park in 1970 on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots – the police raid on a New York City gay bar that touched off the modern gay rights movement.
“In light of the recent vandalism of Pride flags in Midtown and the escalating political rhetoric targeting gay and trans individuals, coupled with policies that increasingly threaten LGBTQIA+ rights, it is more crucial than ever that we understand and honor our history,” Pallot told Georgia Voice.
Pallot said Hayward and Dolan – who are both members of Touching Up Our Roots, the city’s LGBTQ+ history project – lived through the pivotal moments of LGBTQ+ history and that their firsthand accounts and wisdom “provide invaluable insights into the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our community’s journey.”
“We will also hear experiences from the younger generation, bridging the historical narrative with contemporary perspectives,” Pallot said.
Since the first Atlanta Pride Parade began as a protest maruch, rally attendees on Saturday will march to the Rainbow Crosswalk with protest signs to “carry forward the spirit of activism,” Pallot said.
Pallot said attendees can return to the park after the march to continue sharing stories and building community.
