KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City police are investigating a “suspicious death” after a woman was found inside a burning home Sunday morning.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, at about 8 a.m., crews with the Kansas City Fire Department were called to the area of 17th Street and Elmwood Avenue on reports of a house fire.
When crews arrived and began extinguishing the fire, they reported finding an unresponsive woman inside the home.
KCFD attempted to perform life-saving measures on the woman, but told police that her injuries did not look like they were caused by a fire. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene a short time after.
According to KCPD, Bomb and Arson detectives, Violent Crimes detectives, and crime scene investigators were called to the scene by KCFD to help with the investigation.
Police said detectives are working with the medical examiner to determine what caused the woman’s death, and Bomb and Arson detectives are working with KCFD to determine the cause of the fire.
“We want to work to gather all evidence and conduct a thorough investigation while the scene is available to us in the event the medical examiner makes a ruling of homicide,” KCPD said.
At this time, the investigation is being ruled as a “suspicious death.”
