ST. LOUIS- There are two tests today for the outdoor warning sirens in the city of St. Louis. The first test will be at 11 a.m. today and the second will be at 11:15 a.m. They will be activated from two locations to make sure both sites are functioning.
A tornado warning in St. Louis on May 16, 2025 went without sirens because of a staffing lapse at the city’s Emergency Management Agency. CEMA Commissioner Sarah Russell is on paid leave during the investigation.
There are 60 sirens throughout the city that were installed in 1999. Both CEMA and the fire department have a button to activate the sirens, but up until now, it has always been CEMA’s responsibility to sound the alarm.
A previous test revealed system-wide failures, including a broken activation button and storm-damaged sirens. The mayor has shifted responsibility for siren activation to the fire department, which will now manage it from a continuously staffed office.
