SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Arguably the most anticipated race Sunday at Saratoga Race Course was not listed on the card. The horses had to share the spotlight with their fellow four-legged friends for the inaugural Corgi Cup.
48 corgis took to the main dirt track over two qualifying rounds that featured four heats of 12 corgis, with the top three finishers from each heat advancing to the championship round.
Following the seventh thoroughbred race of the day, the stage was set for a 40-yard dash to determine the fastest corgi in the competition. Six-year-old Sam from Coram, New York – winner of the fourth heat and running out of the 10-post – narrowly prevailed in a photo finish over the 7, Kona.
Sam then made his way to the winner’s circle, where he was presented with the championship blanket and first-ever Corgi Cup.
There was a pair of local corgis that qualified for the final race. 7-month-old Biscuit, from Troy, ran out of the 11-post, right next to Frankie in post 12 – a 21-month-old from Clifton Park.
