Boston police radio was down for about 30 minutes, councilors, police union say
The Boston Police Department’s radio system was down for about 30 minutes Sunday night, Flynn and City Councilor Erin Murphy wrote in a letter to Police Commissioner Michael Cox posted Monday.
The councilors wrote that the radio’s breakdown “demands immediate attention and accountability.”
“We respectfully request that the Boston Police Department conduct a full investigation into what caused the radio system breakdown, how it affected the response, and the steps being taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” the councilors wrote.
They called for Boston police to report an investigation’s findings back to the public and city council.
“Our police officers should never be placed in a dangerous position where they respond to active shootings without reliable communication tools,” Flynn wrote on X.
The department did not respond to a request for comment about the radio failure Monday night.
The councilors said the radio breakdown happened while officers were working at the annual Dominican Festival.
“If last night’s violence wasn’t bad enough, officers had to overcome yet another inexplicable failure of the BPD Communications Division as the main radio channel used for the festival went dark for close to 30 minutes before it was restored,” the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association, the union representing Boston police officers, posted on X.
Five people were shot at the end of last year’s daylong Dominican Festival in Franklin Park. In 2012, three women were fatally shot at the end of the same festival.
An investigation is warranted re: @bostonpolice primary radio channel failed for 30 minutes. This is dangerous and unacceptable.
