DENVER (KDVR) — A 22-year-old driver is in custody after he drove into a sports bar’s patio overnight, hitting and injuring four people, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The crash happened just after midnight Sunday morning when the vehicle drove through the patio area of the Ugly Dog Sports Cafe just off U.S. 36 in Adams County, CSP Trooper Hunter Mathews told FOX31’s Kasia Kerridge. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office in an X post said the driver was in custody, and Mathews said he taken to “detox” for the night.
“At the end of the day, if someone decides to get behind the wheel intoxicated, it’s really not if, it’s when. Maybe you get away with it that first time, but that second, third or fourth time, you’re really putting your life and other people’s lives at risk,” Mathews said. “In this case, it just happened to be at that sports cafe where multiple people had to suffer injuries for this person to realize their choices have consequences.”
The bar owner told Kerridge his security staff was able to detain the suspect until law enforcement got to the scene.
The sheriff’s office had originally said three people were injured, but Mathews told Kerridge that number was actually four people. All four were taken to a hospital. At least one had serious injuries, Mathews said.
He said once the CSP investigation into what happened is completed, they will be able to determine charges needed.
