DENVER (KDVR) — A concert in Denver this weekend features a lineup that is nostalgic for many people, including two bands that were especially popular in the early 2000s: Simple Plan and Colorado’s very own 3Oh!3.
This week, FOX31 sat down with members of Simple Plan and 3Oh!3 to talk about the upcoming show and reminisce on the past 25 years.
Simple Plan, a pop-punk band from Canada, is celebrating a quarter of a century of music with their “Bigger Than You Think!” 2025 tour and a documentary about the band’s upbringing, which premiered on Amazon Prime in July.
On Thursday, drummer Chuck Comeau and lead guitarist Jeff Stinco told FOX31 about some memories they have made in Colorado over the years. They said they have performed here many times and always love the crowds and enjoy their time here. They especially enjoy the crowds.
“We feel really attached to Denver, we feel a very good connection,” Stinco said. “It was very foreign for me, I remember being a young musician from Montreal and touring Denver thinking, ‘whoa, this is really different, this is really hip and really cool,’ and I just was really blown away when I stepped foot in Denver for the first time.”
Though the show is one of countless performances the band has done, they are excited to do it again, as this tour has the biggest productions they have ever put on. Comeau said that over the years, they have become more comfortable on stage, but are still nervous yet excited to bring the best show they can for their fans. Luckily, he said he can count on the audience in Denver to have a good time.
“People are happy when you come play in Denver. It just feels like there’s a bit of a lift that you don’t get anywhere else, where people are just stoked to be there. They love life and they’re just enjoying it, and they love to celebrate live music,” Comeau said. “So it feels like a place where music matters and people truly love going to see live music.”
The duo 3Oh!3, consisting of Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte, is originally from Boulder. Colorado is their home state and they are excited to throw a party of a show in Denver this weekend.
“When people ask us our favorite place to play, it’s always Colorado first because we’ve built something symbiotically that builds us up into a different beast than we are anywhere else, and vice versa, I think we just feed off each other,” Foreman said.
“We always try to make our shows, wherever we are, more of a party than a performance per se, and I think that kind of breaking that wall and just involving everybody in the party, and having a smile on everybody’s face, and everybody dancing and having a good time, its kind of the reason why we do what we do and its always the best party in Colorado,” Motte said.
The show is happening at the Junkyard on Sunday, Aug. 17. Comeau and Stinco told FOX31 that one thing they are excited for is to see the fans dressed as characters from Scooby Doo. The band wrote and performed the theme track for the animated show “What’s New, Scooby Doo?” and have been known for it ever since.
At their show in Los Angeles, the band said nearly 50 fans dressed as characters were brought up on the stage, and they plan to do the same thing in Denver. They offered some tips for those who want to be a part of it: show up early and be toward the front of the crowd, and maybe shake it up a bit and dress as characters other than Scooby Doo, like Shaggy, Velma or Daphne.
Tickets are still available online through AXS. The lineup also includes Bowling for Soup and Lolo.
Simple Plan shares memories in Colorado
Stinco said early in his career, he had a photoshoot in the Colorado mountains and he had the opportunity to go fishing and appreciate the state’s beauty.
Comeau is big into hockey and said he is a big fan of the Colorado Avalanche, and has even made friends with some of the players over the years. He said that he has attended many Avalanche games, and his friends on the team often come out to see Simple Plan when they stop in Denver.
“I brought my son, who plays hockey, and we got to go to the morning skate; he was on the ice and he got to visit the locker room and everything. It’s a beautiful arena and such a great team, so it’s exciting. I hope it’s going to be a big year for them,” Comeau said.
“For us, the experience is different in the sense that before and after the show, we’ll visit the city, we’ll go out, we’ll eat out. So that makes it a different experience,” Stinco said.
The band said they are excited to come back and experience more that the state has to offer. Stinco, who enjoys running, said he plans to take a 10K run while he is here. Comeau said he plans to visit a local golf course where one of his friends works.
The band has grown popular in recent years thanks to a trend on TikTok featuring their song “I’m Just A Kid.” In the trend, fans will use the sound to show images of themselves now and when they were a kid. Stinco said that when his kids bring friends over, they introduce him as the “I’m Just A Kid” guy.
“We actually met the girl who started the whole challenge, and she had no idea that it would ever have this viral element to it. I think it’s pretty beautiful, like it’s just pure amazing. The fact that people are throwing back to great beautiful memories, things that they care about, with our song as a soundtrack to it, I don’t know. It’s very touching. It’s moving,” Stinco said.
“Some of them have been really funny, but some of them are like actually really emotional, too, when you take a step back and you think about it. I think that’s why it resonates with people and just happy to be a part of it,” Comeau said.
